New paper on RIBBON WORM BIODIVERSITY — JUNE 4, 2024

Funded by a Field Science Fellowship from the UC Natural Reserve System, UC Davis undergraduate Maddy Frey, Professor Eric Sanford, and colleagues from the University of Oregon studied the diversity of ribbon worms in Bodega Marine Reserve. Remarkably, many of the ribbon worms found were undescribed species, including 11 species that are new to science! This study highlights how much remains to be learned about biodiversity along the California coast. Zoe Brumbaugh receives OUTSTANDING SENIOR Award — May 2024

Congratulations to undergraduate student Zoe Brumbaugh (shown on right, with graduate student mentor Keira Monuki, left) who received the College of Biological Sciences Outstanding Senior Award in Marine and Coastal Sciences! This award was given in recognition for Zoe’s achievements, both in the classroom and through her research on introduced sea anemones in Tomales Bay.

Congratulations, Dr. Emily longman — October 27, 2023

Emily Longman filed her dissertation and presented her Exit Seminar at Bodega Marine Laboratory on October 27th. Her seminar was titled, “Drilling Deeper: Exploring Local Adaptation and Eco-evolutionary Dynamics in a Rocky Shore Community.” Congratulations, Dr. Longman!


8th State of tomales bay conference — September 29, 2023

Keira Monuki spoke about her invasive species research at the Tomales Bay Conference. Her talk was titled, “Understanding the pathways to rampant invasion in a newly introduced sea anemone in Tomales Bay.”


SUMMER STUDENT FILM FESTIVAL — August 1, 2023

Undergraduate students in BIS 124 (Coastal Marine Research) produced short films on their research projects for a general audience. They premiered these outreach films in a Film Festival at Bodega Marine Laboratory in early August. Now you can also watch their outstanding films here!


Emily awarded NSF POST-DOC — May 2023

Congratulations to Emily Longman who was awarded an NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship!  Her project is titled, “Ecological genomics of adaptation in a rocky shore predator-prey interaction.”  Emily will be completing her PhD at UC Davis this fall and then will start her new post-doctoral position in November working in the lab of Professor Melissa Pespeni at the University of Vermont. 


SAM awarded LERNER-GRAY GRANT — JUNE 2023

Congratulations to Sam Walkes who received a Lerner-Gray Grant for Marine Research from the American Museum of Natural History! This grant will support Sam’s dissertation research on Owl Limpets and geographic range expansions. The title of his project is: “Exploring the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of a climate-driven range-shift.”


KEIRA awarded GRANT from tomales Bay foundation — MARCH 2023

Congratulations to Keira Monuki who received a grant from the Tomales Bay Foundation to support her research on invasive sea anemones in Tomales Bay! The title of her project is: "Understanding the pathways to rampant invasion: Genetic structure and plasticity in a newly introduced sea anemone in Tomales Bay." Keira also passed her Qualifying Exam in March!


ADRI PENIX AWARDED Distinguished Scholar Award — April 28, 2023

Congratulations to undergraduate student Adri Penix who received a Distinguished Scholar Award from UC Davis College of Biological Sciences! This award was in recognition for Adri’s outstanding research on behavior and territoriality in intertidal Owl Limpets.

ECOLOGY FILM FESTIVAL — FEBRUARY 1, 2023

Emily Longman organized a free public Film Festival at the Veterans Memorial Theatre in Davis to highlight the short films of 12 graduate students who participated in a Scientific Filmmaking course in Fall 2022. Emily’s efforts were supported by a Bilinski Fellowship. You can learn more about the course and film festival here.

New paper on Ecological leverage points — January 4, 2022

A new paper in Annual Review of Marine Science by Kristy Kroeker and Eric Sanford discusses how species interactions can amplify the physiological effects of global environmental change in the ocean. You can read their paper here!

EMILY LONGMAN AWARDED BILINSKI FELLOWSHIP — December 4, 2018

Congratulations to Emily Longman who was awarded a 2018-19 Russell J. and Dorothy S. Bilinski Fellowship at Bodega Marine Laboratory! This funding will support Emily’s project to examine how intertidal communities in the Bodega Bay region have changed over the past 75 years.
